Gargoyle Project
Which animals did you combine to create your hybrid? Why did you pick these animals/mythical creatures, and which characteristics did you use from each animal?
I combined an octopus and a snake. I picked these specific animals because I thought the tentacles of the octopus would correspond with the snake. I used the tentacles of the octopus and the shape. For the snake, I put two snakes as the tentacles and i added the snake eyes and tongue.
What is symmetry? Draw an example of something symmetrical found in nature?
Symmetry is when two sides of an object is equally balanced and looks like a mirror. I drew a butterfly to show that it is symmetrical.
What functional purpose did gargoyles serve in gothic architecture? How did they help preserve the building?
In gothic architeture, the gargoyles were used to bring out water from its mouth to at like a fountain with a shape of a gargoyle. The gargoyles had an opening for water to let it out when it rained so the building isn't ruined.
Explain the standard “VA.8.2.6 Design both additive and subtractive sculptures.” What does it mean, and how did you include both additive and subtractive techniques in your project
The standard was asking me to use both additive and subtractive on the project to show that I am able to use those techniques. Additive is when I add clay to the project. Subtractive is when I carve clay out to give texture or design. I added the tentacles to my project as well as the eyes. As for subtractive, I carved lines but a little piece of the nose as well.
How could you improve your project? Give specific examples with solutions of how you would like to fix them.
I could have improved on subtracting clay from the mouth or eyes to give it that scary feature I was hoping for. Also, I could have added clay to stabilize the tenatcles because it was falling out. There were many cracks that showed that I didn't smooth out the clay which was why the parts were falling out. I could have added clay to stabilize them by smoothing it out more. I could have subtracted clay by carving out the eye and making texture for the scales.
